Introduction. Adolescence is a phase of the human life cycle including the use of drugs such as alcohol and tobacco. Objectives. The main objective of this study was to analyze whether alcohol and tobacco use is related to psychoeducational variables (e.g., school goals, academic self-concept, and school performance). Method. A random sampling of 1,997 students selected from nine schools in Portugal was used. Results. The results of the present study found that tobacco and alcohol users had significantly lower scores on psychoeducational variables compared to non-users. It should be noted that in verbal self-concept no differences were found between users and non-users in relation to both alcohol and tobacco. Conclusions. For all these reasons, it can be established that there is a relationship between tobacco and alcohol consumption and the psychoeducational variables examined in this study of Portuguese adolescents.
