Psychometric estimation of gains and losses of condom use in young people from Mexico.

Introduction: Behavioural economics postulates two processes: gains and loss, in this study are evaluated with the benefits and costs of condom use. Objective: Determined the psychometric properties (validity and internal conÂsistency) of an instrument to measure gains and losses to use condoms in a sample of Mexican university students. Method: Gain, loss, and condom use were measured in a sample of 257 university students with an age between 18 and 39 years (M= 22.34; SD= 3.6) of Querétaro, Mexico. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) suggests the structure of two factors on the cost and benefit of condom use in sexual intercourse with an excellent fit of the data. The results supported the validity and reliability of the instrument, in addition to the fact that gains and losses preÂdict 41.7% of the variance of condom use. Conclusions: The findings allow us to discuss the usefulness of the scale to assess sexual risk behaviors in different contexts, increasing the consistent use of condoms.
