The intensive use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) especially occurs in adolescents and youth population. This use can have negative consequences that should be considered. The aim of this study was to explore the general and problematic uses of the most popular ICTs among adolescents from Alicante (Spain): Internet, mobile phone and video games. The sample consisted of 319 adolescents between 12 and 18 y/o. Instruments: Questionnaires of experiences related to Internet, mobile and video games (CERI, CERM and CERV) which assess the possible addiction to these new technologies; ad hoc measures to evaluate the frequency of use. The results show that around 10% of the sample presents high scores in problematic use of each ICT. At least, the 2.2% of the sample presents simultaneous problematic use in two media. Problematic Internet use (PIU) remains constant with age, problematic mobile phone (PMP) use increases, and the problematic use of video games is reduced (PVG). There are higher percentages of PIU and PVG, and slightly higher rate of PMP among girls. These data represent a first approach to the phenomenon of the problematic use of ICTs, which suggests the necessity of more specific studies.Downloads
