The inappropriate use of new technologies, may have negative psychological consequences, some potential factors that contribute to this development are self-esteem and social support. The objective of this report is to study in detail the relationship between the inappropriate use of technologies and the psychological variables of anxiety, depression, self-esteem and social support. Additionally, this report introduces an analysis to confirm whether social support acts as a moderator when dealing with inappropriate use of new technologies and anxiety, depression, and self- esteem. Finally, the research establishes a relationship between problematic use of new technology and gender and age. The sample is comprised of 251 young adults between 18 and 30 years old who reside in the Basque Country. The participants completed questionnaires related to the inappropriate use of new technologies, social support perceived, self-esteem, anxiety and depression. The results indicate that a relationship exists between the inappropriate use of new technologies and factors such as anxiety, depression, self-esteem and perceived social support. Moreover, the research shows that the social support moderates the inappropriate use of the Internet and depression. Based on these findings, detailed research is recommended on this critical social issue.Downloads
