Relationship of the problematic use of whatsapp with personality and anxiety in adolescents

WhatsApp for smartphones is a well-known tool that allows us to communicate through instant messaging with other people. The novelty of this sort of app has made psychologial research and practice to be worried about the possible negative psychological consequences, especially in adolescents. The aim of this article is to examine the relationship between the problematic use of WhatsApp and personality and anxiety in adolescents. The sample was a group of 272 participants with ages between 12 and 17 years from the province of Alicante (Spain). The questionnaires of anxiety (STAIC), personality (TIPI) and problematic use of WhatsApp (CERW, CERM adapted) were administered to consented public schools. Results showed 6% exceeds two standard deviation the mean problematic use of WhatsApp. Besides, we discovered significant differences of the personality characterises and anxiety between men and women. The men had negative correlation with emotional stability and affability, while women had negative correlation with emotional stability and age, both genders had positive correlation with anxiety. This study highlights the need to consider variables such as gender, personality traits and anxiety in the prevention of the problematic use of Smartphone in the adolescence.Downloads
