Introduction. Cannabis use among university students is a growing concern due to its implications for physical and mental health. Personality plays a key role in the formation of risk habits, such as cannabis consumption, particularly during youth. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the influence of personality traits on cannabis use in young adults. Method. A cross-sectional correlational study was conducted with 596 randomly selected Mexican university students aged 18 to 29. The Five-Factor Personality Inventory (NEO FFI) and the Marijuana Use Disorders Identification Test (CUDIT) were administered. Results. 37.7% and 15.4% of participants had used cannabis at some point in their lives and in the last six months, respectively. The logistic regression model (X² = 32.348, p = .001) showed that openness to experience (OR = 1.06; 95% CI = 1.01–1.11) and conscientiousness (OR = 0.93; 95% CI = 0.898–0.981) were significantly associated with problematic cannabis use (p < .05). Conclusions. The results highlight the importance of designing personalized preventive interventions tailored to the personality traits of young people, especially in university environments where cannabis use is increasingly accepted.
